If it's wrong, I've probably said it...
No... now quit calling me!

Yesterday, I got several calls on my cell phone. All of them were from the same number and same guy. I missed the first one while I was in class, but answered the second after I got home. He started the call with, "Did you call me?".

I told him no. His number and mine were very similar. Change my 8 to his 7 (in the 10's position) and it's the same number. I told him I didn't know how it might have happened, but maybe he'd misdialed somehow. He said OK and hung up.

He called again a couple of hours later. "Did you call me?" "No, same as last time." "Oh, OK." Click.

He called again a couple of hours later. "Did you call me?" "No, still not me. I think there's something wrong with your phone." "Oh, sorry." Click.

He called again a couple of hours later and it was getting late. "Did you call me?" Click. I was getting tired of it.

He called again after I had gone to bed. When I saw the number on the caller id, I just hit the disconnect button.

He called again at 4 AM. "Did you call me?" "NO, I didn't call you yesterday. I didn't call you last night. I didn't call you this time. I won't call you ever! Please don't call me again!" CLICK! (Well, you can't slam a cellphone down, but that's what I wanted to do.)

It's 8 AM and still no calls. Hopefully he got the clue.

This all reminded me of my last tour to Korea. My barracks phone number was either the same as a heating oil company (with a different area code prefix) or I had gotten the number after they changed theirs. I'd get calls all the time (especially in winter) for heating oil.

They'd ask for a particular person and I'd tell them there was no such person.

They'd try to verify that this was the heating oil company. I'd tell them no.

Then, they'd try to verify the phone number. They'd always say my number. I'd tell them that was the number, but it was mine, not that of the oil company.

It's with a little bit of pride that I tell you all of that above conversation would be in Korean and sometimes, the caller would have no clue I was a foreigner up to this point. I'd tell them that they were calling a barracks room on an American base. Most often I'd get a click at this point. Sometimes, they'd ask me if I knew the right number for the heating oil company. Sometimes, they'd even compliment me on my Korean (those were the best callers).

The best was when they'd call back two minutes later. They'd be in disbelief of everything I told them the first time and try again. Nope, still not the heating oil company. I had one guy call me regularly. I could recognize his voice and accent. It got to the point, I'd just hang up on that guy. Once, a woman yelled at me for messing with her. Apparently, she thought it was my fault that I didn't have any heating oil.

That's hilarious! My husband used to sit on his cell phone at work sometimes and it would call me . . . I kept telling him, there's no way you could have an affair, 'cause you'd end up accidentally calling me and I'd hear everything!

Bon Jovi, eh? Interesting . . .

uh . . . just to clarify, he kept his cell in his back pocket . . .

A friend of mine accidentally called another soldier while in the field. They were at different locations and it was the middle of the night. They were trying to be quiet at my friend's site. The other soldier could hear the my friend talking with his squad leader in low whispering tones. She hung up but his phone called her right back. This time the other soldier tried to get their attention by talking into her phone. My friend couldn't hear it but his squad leader finally did. He thought that the guys wife was calling him in the field, so he loudly said, "Hey, momma, junior can't have any phone loving right now!" and then told my friend to hang his phone up!

They found out about the mix up the next day when the female soldier let them know what happened. Pretty funny!

That's hilarious! I wonder how many soldiers have gotten in trouble because of cell phones?

When my husband was in AIT they weren't supposed to have their cell phones on them during duty hours, but they all did anyways. At one point it became clear that they were all about to be checked for phones, and so they all hid them in their waistbands. My husband, being the honest guy that he is, fessed up to having his. He spent the whole following weekend copying some conduct code (can't remember what) 50 times. That was a really unfun weekend.

I'm sure that's a daily event. Not only have I been the accidental caller, I've been the recipient of those calls. Never anything that would get someone in trouble, but so many accidental calls has to raise the chance. As for just having a phone on you, well, there are jobs where you can't have them on you while you work. Heck, our students have to have them turned off and put away (out of sight) during class. Can't tell you how many times they ring during class. Not silent mode. Not vibrate. Not ring-ring-ring. Nope. Specialized ringtones. We got one guy that has "Because I got high" as his ringtone!

That's what happened when they took the push up away from us! It used to be, you smoked a guy for something like this and that was the end of it. Now, we have to come up with ideas that follow the 'corrective training fits the violation' (NCO's can't give punishment and Soldiers don't commit crimes). While a fitting corrective action is often more appropriate, the push up was a great tool to fix something on the spot.

This one seems especially appropriate today. The phone rang at 5 AM. I picked it up, and heard fax sounds.

I was NOT happy.

My parents phone number was 1 number different to Video Ezy.

and people always ring our number looking for mrs ralph (she lives in chapel hill - she's in the phone book - I looked her up - it's not even close to our number) and some other name thats not in the phone book and a community centre - someone called to ask me if they could sign up for pottery classes.

It's really annoying when I just get the baby to sleep after she cries for ages and ages refusing to go to sleep and the phone rings and its a wrong number (or a telemarketer)
