Still no, but now I know why you think that...
So, I got more calls yesterday. They were the standard.
"Did you call me?"
"Still no. Just like every other time." CLICK.
But, things took an interesting turn yesterday. Before I hung up, I decided to vent on this guy a little more. I went on about how he was really starting to annoy me and that I had never called him (not 100% true, I once hit the redial button after an EARLY morning wake up call from him) and that I had no plans to EVER call him, so he should please try to fight the urge to call me again, as the answer would be the same as always.
He then asked if I had left him a message, because he was sure I'd left him one. I was really annoyed by this question, so I told him that since I hadn't called him, I couldn't possibly have left him a message. So, I told him to leave me alone and stop calling me and I hung up.
Immediately, I had something snap into place in my head. This guy had mentioned messages before and I got to thinking, "What if his voice mail retrieval system was set up to dial the wrong number?" It became clear to me that this was for sure the answer. Never had I gotten the feeling that he was calling me with malicious intent. He always seemed slightly confused by me answering the phone. That had to be it. Well, I didn't have to heart to call the guy back and try to explain it to him. I figured I'd get another chance soon enough.
That chance came today. He called me this morning and this time, I kept my patience and asked him why he was calling me. He asked if I'd left him a message and I told him no. But, I added that I think I knew why he kept calling me. I asked him what number he called when he tried to check for voice messages and he said he didn't dial a number, that he just pressed a single key.
AHA! I asked if he had set up the system himself or was it done for him. He said the helpful folks at the wireless store had set it up for him. I told him that since our numbers were so similar (only one digit different), I was certain that the helpful person at the wireless store made a mistake at set up. It took a couple tries to explain this to him (I got the feeling that this might have been his first cell phone and he was a bit of a techno-noob) but I got it through to him. He decided that he'd go down to the wireless store and ask the clerk for help in fixing this. Hopefully, he'll be able to get the explanation through to the clerk and this will be the end of the issue.
So, I'd like to officially say, "It's OFF." That's right, I know I've flip-flopped more than Kerry on this ON/OFF thing (sorry, just had to throw that in - maybe it'll get me some off topic referrals), but this is hopefully the final time. Even if he doesn't get it fixed right away and I get a few more calls from him, I'll have a lot more patience now that I know why he's calling me. Of course, if he still hasn't fixed it by next weekend, it may be ON again.
Thanks to all for their support. I'm sure 'Enrique' will be glad that it's OFF, too!
