If it's wrong, I've probably said it...
Loooooong Day

Language Day 2005 is over now. It was a long day for me.

My day started at 0430. I got up and drove to San Francisco. My wife took a week long vacation to visit some friends in Hawaii and she was flying back in. Traffic wasn't too bad getting up there. I got to the baggage claim area about five minutes before my wife came out of the security area - perfect timing!

Traffic getting back to Monterey was pretty good, too. I was able to get to work about 20 minutes before the high school students were scheduled to start going through the display areas. My alternate NCOIC is on funeral detail and had a ceremony, so I hoped to get back before he left, but I did have one other NCO there to cover, just in case. I got back in time so my back up didn't have to work, though.

I walked the hallway and checked in with each room to let the instructors know I was there. Everything was moving well. The Korean display from the other school turned out to be very well done. The instructors from my school and the other school still weren't communicating very well, but I'd already given up on trying to force them to work together. Once I gave up on the self inflicted stress concerning the Korean display, life got easier. I spun up the multi-media lab with a movie and sat back. Last year, we had a ton of students sitting in the lab all day long. Part of it was the funny Korean movie we played (¿µ¾î¿ÏÀüÁ¤º¹ - Teach Me English) and part of it was the air conditioned computer lab. This year, we didn't have many students stop in for long. So, I spent a good portion of the day just walking the hallway and making sure everything was in order.

I saw the fan dancers come back from both perforamances. I'd heard that they went very well. Some of the MLIs stopped by to visit and ask if I needed any help. I told them everything was good to go and to enjoy the day. Last year, we had a roster and each MLI worked for 30-40 minutes in the lab, but this year, I decided to give the MLIs the day off so they could enjoy Language Day (working = uniform/not working = civilian clothes).

Around 1430 the stream of students really started to wind down. Most of the rooms started to pack up. I had four casuals from the Navy Detachment there to help out with getting everything back in place, so as rooms emptied, I sent them in to restore the desks and chairs. We finished up around 1530 and I sent them back to their unit. After that, I just had to wait for all the staff to leave so I could lock the building up.

We had a MLI get together planned at Peter B's down in Monterey. I'd been one of the people planning it and was really looking forward to it. But, the 200 mile drive that started the day combined with a late lunch gave me a terrible headache. By the end of the day, I was feeling like deep fried dooky. So, at 1700 I locked up the building and went home. I popped some tylenol and hit the couch. After a couple hours of napping, I felt much better.

Language Day was a success and a lot of fun despite the headaches. I look forward to next year, although maybe I'll find someone else to run it and take a chance to enjoy the activities myself.

Congratulations on a job well done. It is great to read about a young person such as yourself, who takes pride in his work. I would have loved a tour and it would be wonderful to visit Monterey again. Keep up the good work.
