Today in class, I had some extra time during one of the class hours, so I turned the class over to the students and let them make a story one sentence at a time. We went around the room and each student got to add whatever they wanted. I started them off by telling them that it was New Year's Day (¼³³¯ - GTV FEV) and they should start telling the story of Myong Ju's holiday. Here is a rough English translation of what was said. Anything in parenthesis is my own addition or explanation. ...

Years ago (1991), I was a part of a GASP (Gilbert And Sullivan Players) production of The Pirates of Penzance - The Slave of Duty. It was my first attempt at community theater and it was a lot of fun. In honor of National Talk Like a Pirate Day, I dug out some OLD pictures from that production and scanned them. So, here you go - Pour, O pour the pirate sherry; Fill, O fill the pirate glass; And, to make us more than merry Let the pirate bumper pass. There we...

Yesterday, I got several calls on my cell phone. All of them were from the same number and same guy. I missed the first one while I was in class, but answered the second after I got home. He started the call with, "Did you call me?". I told him no. His number and mine were very similar. Change my 8 to his 7 (in the 10's position) and it's the same number. I told him I didn't know how it might have happened, but maybe he'd misdialed somehow. He said OK and hung up. He called aga...

Last night I got a call from a good friend of mine (he has commented before under the name Regular Guy). Regular Guy and I worked together in Hawaii. We got to talking and catching up and we hit the topic of how he got this nick. You see Regular Guy had an old car in Hawaii. I don't remember what it was, but it was one of the old steel boats the US automobile giants put out in the 70's. It had, as my high school driver's ed teacher told us, 'Six feet of steel in front your, six feet o...

I finally figured out how to post a small picture to the side bar on my Joeuser blog page. I knew it could be done as I'd seen it on another JU blog a while back. But being a coding dummy, I had no idea how to do it. Yesterday I spent a lot of time doing various cut and paste jobs of img src code lines but couldn't get it to work. Finally, today, I went back to my More Blogstreet post and saw some helpful hints from Gene Nash (he's the blogger who made me aware you could put a pic in ...

First edit - I forgot to put the link to the quiz in... pretty evil, huh? Here you go Link Here's another quiz you can take. After discussing the four elements and realizing that there was no result for 'deranged/debauched' I figured I'd post the link to this one. There are images but I don't how well they will look here. Are You Evil? Here's my results - Good -- Evil Well, you're kinda evil. They haven't reserved a place for you i...

Fire. Impulsive. Unlike Air, you do jump before you look. When you have something in mind, you won't let go. You have a strong will, and will do anything to get what you want. From time to time you can forget that other people have feelings too, but at most, you're a happy jumping friend. What is your element? brought to you by Quizilla

So, I got to go to my third baseball game of the season yesterday. The Cleveland Indians made their only appearance in Oakland this year and we caught the rubber match of the weekend series. I was really excited about the game. It's been about 2 1/2 years since I got to see the Tribe play and that was the first time in over 15 years before that. Our seats were on the field level, about 18 rows up behind first base and the visiting dugout. I originally thought about trying to get ther...

I love baseball! Especially getting to see a game in person. Tomorrow I'll be going up to Oakland with my wife and we'll be seeing the Indians play the A's. Being a Cleveland boy, I've been waiting all season for this game. This is the first trip they've made out this way all season. The Indians have been electric all season long and have performed a lot better than most people thought they would. Jake Westbrook will be pitching against Barry Zito, so it should be a good pitching battle...

Got your attention with that title, didn't I? Back in 97-98 I lived in Korea and got to work with two good friends of mine - greywar and Different Hanja. For most of the time I was there, only greywar had a car of the three of us. He'd often drive us home after flights or over to main post to do laundry. He'd also drive us to Osan Air Base to use the commissary. At the time, the Camp Humphreys commissary was a little larger than a big 7-11, but the Osan commissary was just like a real ...

I've long had a curiosity about the Korean War. It has to do with being a military Korean linguist, mostly. I know about the US involvement. I know about Task Force Smith, I know about the Pusan Perimeter. I've read about the Incheon Landing and the march north to the Yalu. I know about the Chinese involvement and about the US Marines having to fight their way out of North Korea (more on that later in this post). I've learned about the stalemate that stabalized near todays borders for y...
